Lambda Pi Eta
Lambda Pi Eta History
Lambda Pi Eta was initiated by the students of the Department of Communication at the University of Arkansas and endorsed by the faculty and founder Dr. Stephen A. Smith in 1985. The Speech Communication Association established Lambda Pi Eta as an affiliate organization and as the official national communication honor society for undergraduates in 1994. In February 1996, Lambda Pi Eta was inducted in the Association of College Honor Societies. Currently, there are 250 chapters worldwide.
Lambda Pi Eta Xi Nu History
Lambda Pi Eta Xi Nu chapter was initiated by Dr. Scott Myers at West Virginia University in Spring 2002. The first initiated class in Fall 2002 included three students. In Fall 2004, Dr. Maria Brann took over the faculty advisor position and helped the organization receive University recognition and grow the membership to include approximately 14 new initiates each semester. In 2008, Kerry Byrnes, a doctoral student in the department of communication studies became supervisor of the honorary.
National Requirements
- completed 60 total credit hours
- completed 12 credit hours in Communication Studies
- be currently enrolled in good standing at a recognized institution
- maintained a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA
- maintained a minimum of a 3.25 GPA in Communication Studies
- be in the upper 35% of their institutional academic class
- display commitment to the field of Speech Communication
- pay a lifetime membership fee (at the time of this writing, $30)
