Internships

I will remember my internship experience for the rest of my life. The organizational and communication skills I learned as well as the networks I made will prove to be valuable throughout graduate school and my future career.”
~Alexandria Kincaid ‘07
Intern/Intern Coordinator for Senator Rockefeller in Washington D.C.

How do I apply for an internship through the department?

Once you find an internship that you like on the department website-you must complete a resume and a cover letter for that particular internship. (This means that your cover letter should specifically mention the types of experience that the organization is looking for (no canned cover letters!). Submit your resume and cover letter to Andrea Weber. Once it is approved, she will provide you with the contact information for that internship. You are then responsible for contacting that organization and applying for the internship-similar to a real job.

Remember-these internships are posted continually-so some may already be taken by the time you apply. So-apply early and cover your bases by applying to more than one!

How do I find an internship outside of the department?

If you are interested in getting an internship on your own, you may do this a number of different ways: contact organizations that you may be interested in working for, network with family and friends, research internships through books or online (there are a number of resources in the Career Services Center). By the way, a quick internet search on google (key words: West Virginia. internships) brought up groovejobs.com, wvgip.org, www.job-hunt.org. If you do not limit yourself to West Virginia-you can do internships all over the country and/or the world. Some organizations even provide room and board!
