Obtaining a Minor in Communication Studies
Communication Studies Minor Fact Sheet
Communication skills are consistently among the most sought after skills in the workplace. No matter what your major is, communication will be an important aspect of your job. A minor allows you to formally document your knowledge of human communication. In addition, most of the courses required for the minor can be used to meet WVU LSP requirements.
A minor consists of 15 hours of course work in the following specified areas:
A.You must take COMM 100 and COMM 102, COMM 100 and COMM 104, or COMM 112, COMM 122, or COMM 303.
B.You must take all of the following three classes: COMM 105, COMM 306, and COMM 308.
C. You must take one of the following classes: COMM 305, COMM 309, or COMM 316.
Many of these courses meet WVU requirements. COMM 305 is a Cluster A course. COMM 100, 102, 104, 105, 306, 308, and 309 fall under Cluster B. COMM 316 meets a WVU Cluster B and an International/Gender Studies requirement.
FAQ’s
Who can minor in Communication Studies? Virtually anyone in any college or major. At one time, students had to have a major in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. That is no longer a requirement.
Do I need to take a foreign language? No, unless your major department or college requires it.
What GPA do I need to minor in Communication Studies? You will need to have a 2.0 cumulative GPA at the time of graduation. Keep in mind that you need that to graduate from WVU.
What kind of grades do I need in my minor classes? Students must earn at least a C in each of the courses counted toward the minor to be certified as a minor in Communication Studies at graduation.
How do I declare my minor? You need to see your academic advisor. Your advisor will help you fill out a Declaration of Intent to Complete a Minor form.
